Mr Nigel Smith, Work Experience Coordinator and Head of Careers
I joined teaching later in life following a varied career in industrial chemistry and sales with a blue chip oil company. The change in career path followed a re-evaluation of my priorities in life. I pursued a route to become a teacher called the Graduate Teacher Training Programme here at the Warriner.
Whilst waiting for the course to start in the September of 2002 I spent 4 months as a Teaching Assistant (which, incidentally, was probably the best training I have undergone to become a teacher).
Having successfully secured a job with The Warriner School Science department, I became the school’s first Student Motivation Inspiration and Reward Coordinator and followed this by becoming key stage 4 Science Coordinator and then Subject Leader for a maternity cover period. I am now Careers Leader and Work Experience Coordinator whilst retaining a Science teaching role.
Teaching is an incredibly rewarding profession and opportunities exist with the school to diversify from your subject to excel in different areas that utilise personal skills and talents.
